Response to Planning application
Crown House, Christchurch Court

To CDC

The Banbury Civic Society wishes to express its strongest support for this laudable proposal.

The application has many merits that make it infinitely preferable to the long-overdue rival application by the building's owner.

Firstly, this application is actually likely to be seen through to fruition.

Secondly, this proposal will create 40 much-needed affordable, sustainable, self-build flats in the town centre, helping 40 individuals or families onto the housing ladder.

Thirdly, this application seeks to refurbish and convert the historic but disused former Crown Hotel on Bridge Street, rather than demolishing it. As the building is both within a key part of the Banbury Conservation Area and, we understand, locally listed, this is a significant benefit.

Regrettably, as with 13/00354/CDC (1 West Street) and 13/00355/CDC (1-5 Juniper Court), there is little explicit evidence that that there has been significant input from Cherwell's conservation team, we would ask that suitable conditions are attached to any consent, so as to ensure that the external appearance of the former Crown Hotel frontage on Bridge Street is not marred by inappropriate replacement windows, rainwater goods etc.

We would also request that a photographic record be made of the old Crown Hotel prior to the commencement of works. This society would be delighted to carry this out for the applicants, or to help in other way that we can.

Yours sincerely Mo Mant (Vice Chairman, Banbury Civic Society)
